‘Broken legs happen in football’

The Premiership footballer whose leg was broken in an horrific tackle at the weekend says: “These things can happen in football.”
The injury suffered by Arsenal’s Eduardo da Silva left his bone sticking out of his leg and was so grim that some TV stations declined to show replays.Eduardo, 25, has issued his first comments on Arsenal’s official website since the tackle by Birmingham City’s Martin Taylor on Saturday.
“I don’t remember the incident very well and it is not something that I want to see again on television or in the newspapers,” he said.
“All I remember is that when I fell, I looked down at my foot and it had turned the other way. The rest is just a blank.
“It was an unfortunate situation but these things can happen in football.”
He has been transferred from Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital to an unnamed London hospital, where he will undergo further treatment.
Eduardo said he was unsure of the extent of the injury but knows he will not play for Arsenal again this season and will miss the European Championships this summer.
Taylor, who was sent off for the challenge and later visited Eduardo in hospital, has issued a statement insisting there was “no malicious intent” in his tackle.
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who was on loan at Birmingham last season, believes Taylor would not deliberately have looked to inflict an injury.
The Danish international said: “He is really calm. I’ve been told he is very upset and I know he would belike that.”
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger back-tracked on his initial comment that Taylor “should never play football again”, saying it was made “in the heat of the moment”.
